After years in engineering and industrial relations management within British Telecom, I became a Health & Safety Manager for BT for the Home Counties in the early 1980's. Covering a wide geographical area and a very diverse range of activity provided a very good grounding for the later development of an independent consultancy.

A career change in 1995 which co-coincided with the introduction of the Construction (Design & Management) Regulations proved to be the catalyst for the formation of Slater Smith & Associates as a consultancy specialising in the construction and building facilities management field.

The practical experienced gained from the building of two family homes is the basis of the down to earth, practical approach which still applies to the support offered to clients.

A keen sailor with more than 40 years experience has also made me very aware of the importance of health and safety in leisure activities where family members lives may be at risk if the hazards are not properly assessed and controlled.

Sensible, practical and well balanced are key criteria in my approach to Health & Safety.

As a Chartered Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (CMIOSH) and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Public Health (FRSPH) I am an experienced professional with good interpersonal skills and a wealth of practical experience in the management of Health and Safety. A good team player I am used to dealing with all levels of management and personnel in health safety and environmental issues. I have been involved in all aspects of the Construction Design & Management Regulations 2007 (CDM) since it was a consultative document in 1993.  I was on the NJUC committee commenting on the regulations in draught form. In addition I was involved in designing and delivering training courses for the Construction Industry from June 1995 to the present. My CDMC experience began in 1995 and I have been appointed as CDMC for many major Projects since that date. At present I am CDM Co-ordinator on many projects under the CDM 2007 regulations.

Additionally I have been approved by the Health and Safety Executive as a workplace advisor under their funded self help programme Workplace Health Connect.

In 2011 I was approached by the HSE and successfully passed their assessment to be a registered consultant under their initial OSHCR Scheme

Hello, my name is Michaler and I started my health and safety career some 17 yrs ago with Liverpool City Council.

Given the array of service provided by the Council each working day was different and provided a great learning experience/opportunity for me to develop my skills and knowledge.

I’m a member of IOSH and hold ‘Charter’ status and also Committee member of Merseyside and Cheshire Construction Group.

For the past couple of years I have been involved with NHS and the newly emerging organisations for Facilities Management.

I recall taking on my first full time role within H&S, some 15 years ago, with a mixture of excitement and if I’m honest, some degree of trepidation given the safety critical nature of the heavy industrial environment I was now responsible for. I quickly grasped the value of adopting an effective risk assessment approach combined with the right balance of sensible risk management.

Since those early days, I’ve worked in a variety of business sectors that present their own individual challenges but I’ve always applied a risk assessment mind set and delivered pragmatic solutions, whether I’ve been assessing a confined space chemical cleaning activity, on a petrochemical site, or a simple workstation assessment within a low risk office environment.

Over recent years I’ve focused on improving standards of  Health, Safety and Fire within the NHS and take a lot of satisfaction knowing that the team have contributed to making significant improvements, where financial resources are limited.

I look to the future confident that the team of H&S professionals will continue to improve on the high standards already achieved.

With a background in Local Government, my background is founded in construction and civil engineering, with an increasing interest in health and safety from about 1978 when I became a union H&S Rep. This interest in health and safety lead naturally to taking on the role of Planning Supervisor on numerous projects under the former CDM regulations (1994).

In 2000 I passed the NEBOSH certificate and took up a permanent role as health and safety adviser later passing my diploma and gaining chartered membership of IOSH.

I left local government in 2010 and have since taken on numerous appointments including H&S adviser and manager posts for a number of construction companies, business health and safety consultant with a nationwide human resources company and more recently an independent consultant for a variety of smaller businesses.

I am  married to Dawn and have two sons Dan 24 and Al 21. Outside work I am a keen caravanner,  interested in many sports especially motor sport and I am serving member of the Army Reserve (formerly TA).
